Maternal Brain: Serum Neurofilament Light Chain Levels Reveal Intense Neuroplasticity in the Female Brain
Serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) elevation is considered a biomarker of central or peripheral axonal damage. However, elevated sNfL levels have also been found in the postpartum period in healthy women following normal pregnancies. The possibility that this postpartum increase does not reflect nervous system damage, but rather intense neuroplasticity in the healthy female brain, is discussed.
