Komeil Aghaei Kouhi

  • Position: Fellow - Biologist, S. Luigi Gonzaga University Hospital
  • Expertise: Neurodegenerative diseases, biobanking, fluidbiomarkers, Multiple Sclerosis
  • Email: k.aghaei@sanluigi.piemonte.it

Komeil Aghaei is a neurobiologist with a Master’sdegree in Cellular and MolecularBiology (Neurobiology) from the University of Turin. His researchfocuses on neural circuit integration, brain repair, and network dynamics in health and disease. Duringh is thesis work at the Neuroscience Institute Cavalieri Ottolenghi (NICO), he investigated in vivo calcium activity of striatal grafts in a rat model of Huntington’s disease, contributing to a deeper understanding of neuronal network integration in neurodegenerative disorders.
Since October 2025, he has been a research fellow at NICO in the Clinical Neurobiology group. Within the framework of the CRESM Biobank, he contributes to the processing and management of biological samples from Multiple Sclerosis patients, supporting International research on neurological autoimmune diseases. His current work focuses on fluid biomarkers, particularly the detection and analysis of molecole such as serum Neurofilament Light Chain (NFL) and GFAPusing ultra-sensitive techniques, with the goal of improving clinical strategies for MS diagnosis, disease monitoring, and treatment follow-up.

Research focus

He is currently engaged in two main research areas:

Biobanking. He is involved in processing samples from Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients, stored in the recently established CRESM Biobank. The goal of BB-CRESM is to support global research in the field of neurology, particularly in neurological autoimmune diseases such as MS.

Fluid biomarkers. Komeil studies fluid biomarkers, such as serum Neurofilament Light Chain (NFL) and GFAPusing ultra-sensitive techniques to evaluate their relevance in the clinical management of MS patients — including diagnosis, disease activity monitoring, and treatment follow-up.
