Luna Berrino obtained her bachelor’s degree in Medical Biotechnology from the University of Piemonte Orientale (Novara). In 2023, she earned her master’s degree in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology from the University of Firenze with a thesis on cerebellar morphological alterations and sensitivity to hypoxia in a mouse model of Ataxia Telangiectasia. In March 2024, she joined NICO as a Research Fellow in Filippo Tempia’s lab under the supervision of Eriola Hoxha, continuing her work on the cerebellum.

Research focus

The project where she is conducting her research is focused on uncovering the molecular mechanisms driving neurodegeneration in ataxia telangiectasia, a rare disease triggered by mutations in the ATM gene. The project studies possible phenotypic, morphological, and structural alterations, with particular emphasis on the critical role of Purkinje cells. This study aims to identify novel therapeutic targets for a currently untreatable disease.
