Effects of Experience on Adult Neurogenesis in Turtles

Alice S. Powers, Ph.D.
Research Professor of Psychology, Stony Brook University - NY

Different areas of the telencephalon of turtles participate in different kinds of learning and memory, such as maze learning, discrimination learning, and reversal learning. As in most nonmammals, adult neurogenesis occurs throughout the telencephalon in turtles, along the ventricular walls.

We investigated whether different experiences would produce changes in the number of new cells produced in adult painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and whether the location of those effects would vary depending on the experience.
