Terminal differentiation of vomeronasal sensory neurons and GnRH-1 neuronal migration, from new models to new stories

The nasal placode gives rise to a plethora of different neuronal cell types. How such diversity is established and how different neuronal populations interact during development is still largely unknown.
By using in-vivo genetic strategies we discovered that that correct development of the olfactory bulbs and connection of the olfactory/vomeronasal neurons to the forebrain are not needed for GnRH-1 neuronal migration. Moreover by analyzing a knock-in/out mouse model for the transcription factor Tfap2e we discovered a key role for this molecule in controlling the terminal differentiation of vomeronasal sensory neurons.
